La Moda Chilena: Festival de Viña del Mar Gala 2013

In lieu of the Oscars buzz, here is a little taste of Chilean fashion.  These pictures are from the Gala at the Festival de Viña del Mar (a twin city so-to-speak of Valpo).  The Festival is a 6 day musical event showcasing acts such as Maná, Romeo Santos, Elton John (yes the Elton John...), los Jonas Brothers (according to my host sister, Rosío, they aren't so popular here either), and countless others.  It stars at around 9 every night and goes on until the wee hours of the morning, and then the morning programs rehash every moment of it the next day (sound familiar??).

I digress.  The Gala was held Friday night, I believe.  I think that it was just a fancy party--not really an awards show.  So all the stars of Chile walked la alfrombra roja (red carpet) in gorgeous (or not so gorgeous) dresses.  The next morning every morning TV program (all of which moved from Santiago to Viña to cover the festival) examined in detail all the dresses and missteps of the stars.

Another thing about this alfrombra roja that I really liked was that the stars walked down the carpet one by one, or as a couple.  There weren't any photographers on the carpet with them or news anchors talking to them.  There was also a section in the middle of the carpet that turned so everyone got a 360 degree view of the dress.  This is brilliant and America should follow Chile's lead.  No more chasing for the one full-length picture of a star!
